What are dermal fillers?
We offer dermal filler products licensed by Health Canada: Restylane, Teosyal and Juvederm. Dermal filler is made of hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in your skin, formed into a gel. Over time, your body breaks it down and absorbs it.
These products are generally used to replace volume where volume has been lost, but can also be used to smooth out lines and wrinkles.
DermNurse is conservative in its approach to dermal filler injections. It is better to under-correct the volume loss than overcorrect. Having too much filler results in looking “overdone,” which is worse than not being treated at all.

FAQ
What is the difference between Botox or Dysport and dermal fillers?
Botox and Dysport temporarily relax the muscles of the face or neck that cause unwanted wrinkles or muscle action. Their results usually take up to 2 weeks to reach full effect and last up to three months. Dermal filler is an injectable, sterile hyaluronic acid (a simple sugar cross-linked into a gel) that replaces volume where it has been lost, or adds volume where you would like more. Dermal fillers also help soften wrinkles. Areas commonly injected include the lips, under-eye hollows, cheeks, temples, jawline and chin. Results are instant and can last 6 to 12 months.
Will I look unnatural or overdone?
Injecting dermal filler is an art. At DermNurse we practice a “less is more” approach. Reaching your beauty goals is not a race: we can always add more filler in the future, but it is harder and more costly to remove unwanted filler. Poorly placed or too much filler leads to an unnatural appearance. Dermal filler also has its limitations. It cannot create lift like plastic surgery can, and the true foundation of beauty is healthy skin, so a combination of different treatment approaches may be recommended.
Can dermal filler be dissolved if the results are not what I expected?
Yes. Dermal filler composed of hyaluronic acid can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. It works over the course of 18 hours after it is injected. You may require more than one treatment to achieve optimal results.
Can dermal fillers help with wrinkles?
Wrinkles can be very difficult to get rid of, especially if they are deep, located in an area of constant expression or skin folding, or have been present for a long time. Other wrinkle-reducing options include topical retinoids, Botox or Dysport, Fractora, microneedling and chemical peels. Injected directly into the wrinkle, dermal filler instantly creates a softer and smoother appearance. More than one treatment may be required for best results.
How long do results last?
Generally six to twelve months, sometimes shorter, depending on how fast you metabolize the filler. You may metabolize it faster if you are on a calorie-restrictive diet, work out strenuously, or do hot yoga or hot saunas; sometimes the reasons are unknown.
What are the alternatives to dermal filler?
PRP or PRF, and the biostimulators Sculptra and Radiesse, which build collagen. Radiesse also adds some slight volume straight away; Sculptra’s volume builds gradually. Skin resurfacing treatments such as Fractora are not alternatives: they do not replace lost volume.
What are dermal fillers made of?
The dermal fillers used at DermNurse are licensed by Health Canada and made from hyaluronic acid (Restylane, Teosyal, Juvederm). DermNurse does not use permanent fillers. At your visit, please let us know if you have previously been injected with a permanent filler such as Artecol, Artesense, Beauticall, Bioaclamide, Dermalive or Dermadeep.
How is safety handled?
Hyaluronic acid is readily accepted by the skin, which contains its own. Our injection techniques adhere to the latest safety protocols, are respectful of anatomy, and use cannulas in high-risk zones. On rare occasions, filler can block or restrict blood flow. This is very rare, and when it happens there are evidence-based protocols to reverse it.
